ARRIVA TOUR
This annual tour is organised by Tony Salmon, who is the Dewsbury Bus Museum Hon Secretary and a driver at Arriva's Dewsbury Depot since 1989.
The latest tour took place on Sunday 23rd May 2010. Arriva very kindly provided a bus - 1802 (YJ08 ECY). All five Arriva-Yorkshire depots were visited - Heckmondwike, Dewsbury, Belle Isle, Selby and Castleford - as well as Wakefield Bus Station, and over 80 people took part. The Dewsbury Bus Museum's "Ethel" (EHL 344) came along for the whole tour and Gordon Brooke brought Yorkshire Woollen 622 (HD 7905) back to its old territory of 60 years ago! Also joining us was Adam Smith with West Riding Lynx 252 (C920 FMP). But the star of the show this year was South Yorkshire 81 (TWY 8), a Dewsbury Bus Museum vehicle, dating from 1950, that was making its first appearance after 29 years off the road.
A great time was had by all in sweltering temperatures, and £722.72 was raised for the SICK CHILDREN'S TRUST - a charity providing free accomodation for families of seriously ill children in hospitals around the UK. Our nearest is Eckersley House, in the grounds of Leeds General Infirmary, where there are specialist children's liver and oncology (cancer) units.
(Click the Sick Children's Trust logo at the top of this page to see their website).
The cheque was presented to MICHAEL CRAWFORD OBE (better known
as Frank Spencer, or the Phantom of the Opera) at Eckersley House on
1st July 2010. Michael is president of the charity and is pictured here
with Dewsbury Bus Museum Hon. Secretary Tony Salmon after the
ceremony.
A special website (www.arrivatour.co.uk) was set up to promote the
tour, and this now contains the links to several hundred photographs,
published on various Fotopic websites.
