WEST RIDING 733 (EHL 344)
Leyland Tiger PS2/12A - Chassis No. 520140
Body: Roe, No. GO3521
Date new: 1952
This bus was new to the West Riding
Automobile Company Ltd, of Barnsley Road,
Wakefield as one of a batch of twelve,
726-737 (EHL 337 - EHL348) built as buses
with high-back seats for dual purpose work.
A previous batch of six, 720-725 (EHL 331 -
EHL 336) were built as full coaches by
Charles H Roe of Leeds. 733, along with
the rest of the "buses" batch was one of
the first buses to use the old Wakefield Bus
Station, which was closed and demolished
late in 2001, the new Bus Station being
opened in October of that year.
733 served the company well, in its latter years as spare bus / tow bus at Selby depot. Upon withdrawal, 733 was bought by the newly formed West Riding Wulfrunian Preservation Society in late 1971. It was repainted back into its original West Riding livery for its first outing in preservation, the East Coast Run in 1972.
During its time in preservation 733 has received only a minimal amount of restoration, this being engine and running unit services and a second repaint - a testament to its original construction and subsequent loving care given to it by all of the West Riding employees and society members who have been involved in its past.
The VIDEOS page of this website contains a 9-minute film by Paul Salmon of 733 in action - take a look!
